The collection consists of an 1818 machinery license granting Jacob Stirewalt permission to use patented machinery in a mill on the Coddle Creek of the Rocky River in Cabarrus County, N.C. The license was issued by inventor Oliver Evans, who held the patent.

Born near Newport, Del., Evans received little formal education but taught himself mechanics and mathematics, devoting his life to inventing machines. In 1787 he received a patent from Delaware for a system that automated flour milling; published The Young Mill-Wright & Miller's Guide in 1795; and devoted many years to developing the steam engine, including a steam boat launched in 1805. Jacob Stirewalt was born in Rowan County, N.C., in 1805. He was married to Henrietta Henkel in 1833 and ordained pastor in Lincoln County, N.C., in 1838. He died in Shenandoah County, Va., in 1869.
